While the contemporary world is increasingly characterized by conflict and crisis, challenging imagined geographies and geopolitical patterns formerly regarded as stable, exceptional identity positions seem to gain ground. As the world globalizes, a growing need to construct the Self as special, superior, unique and exceptional seems to emerge. Nations, countries, regions and cities as well as social groups claiming to be exceptional, obviously follow a mission. They use their alleged superiority, be it of an economic, a power-related or an imagined ethical and moral kind, to supply the other parts of the world with strategies of good governance and exemplary models.

Cultures @ Work – Working with Cultures

Summer School in Lissabon, Portugal, 23.06.-30.06.2013

Die Summerschool, die vom Lisbon Consortium unter der Leitung von Isabel Gil organisiert wurde fand außer an der Universidade Catolica an weiteren kulturellen Orten in Lissabon statt. Damit war der Besuch der Veranstaltungen auch immer eine Entdeckungsreise durch die Theater, Museen, Kinos und Kulturzenten der Stadt. Diese besondere Erfahrung verband auf überzeugende Weise das Konferenzthema „Cultures at Work – Working with Cultures“ mit den Orten der kulturellen Produktion und Rezeption. Die kreative und offene Atmosphäre übertrug sich auch auf die Präsentationen und Diskussionen und machte die Konferenz zu einem intensiven und produktiven Erlebnis.

In der beeindruckenden Räumlichkeit des Elektrizitätsmuseums konnte ich meinen Vortrag:  „Opposing Surveillance: Artistic Strategies between Subversion and Reinforcement“ halten. In Relation zum Konferenzthema „Cultures at Work – Working with Cultures“ standen die Selbst-Positionierungen der Künstler, sowie das oftmals ungewollte produktive Potential künstlerischer Interventionen und Projekte im Fokus. Begünstigt von der Tagesaktualität des Themas durch die Meldungen über US-amerikanische Geheimdienstspionage im großen Stil, entwickelte sich eine lebhafte Diskussion zu Privatsphäre und Datensicherheit, sowie zu künstlerischen Ansätzen, die die sich in diesem Feld positionieren.
